Maths Tip of the Day #2: Always Check the Units!
It might seem like a small detail, but keeping an eye on units can make a huge difference in maths problems — especially in measurement, speed, area, and volume questions. One of the most common mistakes students make is forgetting to convert units so they’re working consistently throughout the question.
Imagine this: a question gives you a length in centimetres, a width in metres, and asks for the area. If you don’t convert them to the same unit first, your answer will be incorrect — even if your method is spot-on. Maths relies on consistency, and units that don’t match are like puzzle pieces from different sets.
A great habit is to pause at the start of any question and highlight or underline the units. Ask yourself:
-
Are the units the same throughout?
-
Do I need to convert anything before I start working?
For example, if a question gives:
-
Length = 300 cm
-
Width = 2.5 m
First, convert 300 cm to 3 m, then continue the calculation.
Also, remember to include the correct unit in your final answer — whether it’s cm² for area, km/h for speed, or litres for volume. Leaving it out can cost marks, especially in exams where precision matters.
In short: don’t let a simple unit error undo your hard work. Check, convert, and label — and you’ll be on the right track!
