Maths Tip of the Day #1: Show the Formula and All Your Working
When solving a maths problem, especially one that uses a formula, it’s not just about getting the right answer — it’s about showing how you got there.
Teachers and exam markers love to see the full process. Why? Because showing your working proves that you understand the steps involved. Even if the final answer is incorrect, you can still pick up method marks for using the right formula and applying it correctly.
For example, if a student is asked to find the area of a triangle and they simply write down the answer, there’s no way to know whether they used the correct formula — or just guessed. But if they show:
= ½ × 8 × 5
= 20 cm²
then it’s clear they’ve understood what to do. And if they make a small slip in the calculation, they might still get part marks for applying the correct method.
Showing your working also helps you catch mistakes. Writing out each step allows you to double-check your process and gives you the chance to spot any errors before handing it in. It’s also a lifesaver when revising later — your notes and past questions become much more useful if they show the full method, not just the final answer.
So make it a habit: write the formula, substitute the values, and show every step. Your future self — and your grades — will thank you!
